Important Things explores the intricate interconnectedness of community through movement, sound, and the transformation of donated and found objects. The project invites community members to donate objects of personal significance, which are then transformed into kinetic components and integrated into a large, house-shaped sculpture. This first iteration of the project was done by my advanced sculpture class in the spring of 2024. Each student brought a found object to class then used wood, metal, motors, and hardware to make the object perform kinetically.
After constructing the kinetic components, I installed them into the timber house sculpture, miked each object and created a system to “play” the kinetic components. The sounds were processed through a computer then piped back into the sculpture.
